Summary

As the Senior Product Design Engineer within our Blue Arc--- division based in Plymouth, MI, you will responsible for providing accurate, timely and cost-effective engineering solutions that work well within the limits of our manufacturing equipment and assembly capabilities.

Additionally, these solutions must meet customer expectations, perform for the desired warranty period, and comply with all applicable regulatory requirements.

What you'll be doing

  • Participates as a key member of the product development team to execute new product improvement/development projects. Also maintains legacy products.
  • Conceptual design of new components and sub-systems following established practices and core engineering principles. Works through engineering challenges using tools such as CAD layouts, stack-ups, analytical tools, as well as various internal applications and techniques to perform basic analyses of new designs. Proficient in the practical application of engineering statics, dynamics, structural mechanics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Generating DFMEAs for components and sub-assemblies; using a DFMEA to generate a design validation plan & report (DVP&R).
  • Executing test plans to fully validate components and systems. Draft and communicate engineering reports as part of the validation process.
  • Prepare presentations and communicate plans, results, etc. to a wide audience, including suppliers and customers.
  • Maintain quality standards by following proper inspection procedures.
  • Understand and adhere to current quality and control policies.
    Be able to solve manufacturing and assembly problems utilizing problem-solving techniques and methodologies
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, production personnel, purchasing personnel, and customers to create optimal solutions to support the business
    Determine the effectiveness of the engineering solutions, understanding un-intended consequences to manufacturing processes, tooling, and option capability
  • Initiate changes to drawings, solids models, and bills of material
  • Effectively utilize Aurora (corporate software) to research product/spec history and structure, where used on component parts, and product compatibility.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related Engineering field)
    • Minimum of 8 years experience in product design engineering solutions. Experience related to the design and development of on-highway, heavy truck, specialty, or automotive vehicles preferred
    • Strong problem-solving & analytical skills. Understand the cost drivers associated with various materials, design features, and manufacturing processes.
    • Working knowledge of SolidWorks 3-D CAD with the ability to review and modify assemblies, models, and detail drawings
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook)

      • Understand the extrusion process, metal fabrication, forming, tolerances, and capabilities
      • Additional skills in FMEA, FEA, CFD, lean manufacturing, and design for six sigma (DFSS)
      • Creative and innovative team player with a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence & high standards
      • Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision. Able to effectively prioritize and execute multiple concurrent assignments.
      • Proficient with basic program management and time management tools.
      • Effective verbal & written communication and interpersonal skills
