State of Massachusetts Chief Medical Officer in Canton ,
Massachusetts Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC),
operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is
seeking a dynamic and innovative physician who will serve as the
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the facility. The selected
candidate will communicate vision, establish and maintainstandards
for medical and clinical services and practice by providing
leadership to the hospital’s staff in the care of children and
young adults with multiple disabilities.The CMO will serve and
chaira variety of hospital committees,as well asbeing an active
member of the Medical Staff and its executive committee.
Theincumbentparticipates in the admissions of new patients, and as
required, oversee that clinical staff completes full admission
history, physical examinations, and documentation of plan of care
in the electronic medical record. As appropriate, the CMO
willparticipate in an administrative on-call schedule,make rounds
to evaluate patient status, order medication changes, provides
coordination of medical and clinical services, and directs
appropriate patient care measured to maximize patient outcomes.
Our selected candidateensures that medical services provide safe
and high-quality clinical care, appropriate educational
programming, utilization review and performance improvement
functionsthat are in compliance with Joint Commission standards.The
CMO reports directly to the CEO of the Hospital and is a member of
the Senior Leadership team. Direct reports include the Assistant
Medical Director, Director of Therapies including Physical Therapy,
Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy, Director of Clinical
Services, Director of Infection Prevention, Employee Health, and
Specialty Clinics, and Director of Rehab Engineering, and other
medical subspecialties and administrative professionals.
Please note: The incumbent of this position will function as
“Chief of Service” and as such is excluded from Bargaining Unit 7
under the MNA collective bargaining agreement. Therefore most

Provides leadership, medical oversight,
clinicalsupervision,educational programsand implementation of
exceptional health care delivery systems for PRHC.
Serves as an executive member of hospitals’ senior management
team and an advisor to the CEO in matters pertaining to policy and
review setting, service, quality, budget management, clinical
outcomes, patient safety and efficient practice.
Participates in the development of the medical activities
budget, including staffing and support plan and equipment needs
projection; ensure that departmental business and financial
operations conform to Commonwealth purchasing and contract
Partnerscollaboratively with the Director of Nursing to ensure
that patient care needs are delivered in a safe and
Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards
consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and all Joint
Commission, CMS, and DPH Health Care Quality standards.
Recommends qualifications for credentialing, job descriptions,
and evaluation standards for all clinical staff; lead efforts to
recruit physicians and mid-level providers in conjunction with
Human Resources, fiscal and the CEO.
Serves as a clinical leader of the DPH Public Health Hospitals
System and as a member of its Clinical Leadership Committee
Oversees medical education activities in the hospital in
collaboration with the Director of Staff Development.
Serves as primary clinical liaison with other DPH
Hospitals,Department of Children and Families(DCF), Department of
Mental Health (DMH), Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education(DESE), MassHealth,and other patient referral sources.
Assures the development and implementation of effective disease
management programs, clinical protocols and guidelines, other
decision tools, and review outcomes
Champions the quality of patient care services by monitoring,
directing and collaborating with departmental and hospital
inter-disciplinary processes and functions that promote safety,
timeliness, efficacy, collaboration, efficiency and
patient-centeredness of clinical service delivery
Liaiseswith external entities with which hospital business is
conducted, including patient referral sources, public and
non-profit clinical partners, professional organizations, academic
programs, and community relations.
Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring,
evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education
initiatives; Creates and fosters an environment encouraging
Current and valid registration as a fully licensed physician
under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties in
area of specialization.

Demonstrated leadership role in a healthcare delivery system
with knowledge of the principles and practices of management at the
senior level, including planning, budgeting, organizing, directing,
motivating, controlling and decision making.
Experience working with chronic disease and disability,
especially children with co-morbid conditions.
Understanding of and familiarity with the management and use of
electronic medical record keeping.
Visionary leader with the traits of an influencer which include
being an educator, facilitator, collaborator, communicator,
negotiator, mentor, and a philosophy of collaboration and

Strong business acumen, including working knowledge of changing

non-clinical) including performance appraisal, employee

patient care departments and operations brings to the patient care

hospital predominately serving children and young adults (ages
8–22) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least five years of full-time or
equivalent part-time, professional experience as a registered
physician three years of which must have been in a specialized
field such as pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, endocrinology,
