An Official website of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Job Description - Director of Rehabilitation Therapies (Physician) (210002EP) Job Description Director of Rehabilitation Therapies (Physician) - ( 210002EP ) Description Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC), operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced pediatric and/or rehabilitative physician who will serve as the Director of Rehabilitation Therapies (DRT) for the facility. The selected candidate will have oversight for ancillary services including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and the Rehab Engineering Department. The DRT plans, monitors, and oversees the quality and scope of programs and services for assigned departments at the PRHC. Our selected candidate ensures that standards are established and maintained for all programs, services and practice by providing leadership to the hospital's staff in the care of children and young adults with multiple disabilities to ensure the highest level of care in compliance with established standards of care and scope of practice to maximize patient outcomes. This position serves--and/or chairs a variety of hospital committees, and is an active member of the Medical Staff and its executive committee. Schedule:-- 40 hours per--week, Monday through Friday
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Provides visionary leadership, oversight, supervision, and implementation of exceptional rehabilitative needs, programs, and services at PRHC.
  • Serves as an executive member of hospitals' senior management team; reports to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and serves as executive member of hospital senior management team for policy setting, decision making, budget management and strategic planning.
  • Participates in the development of the rehabilitation services budget, including staffing and support plans and equipment needs projection; ensures that departmental business and financial operations conform to Commonwealth purchasing and contract requirements.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing levels for all assigned departments in accordance with clinical and therapeutic service plans; leads efforts to recruit appropriate staff in conjunction with Human Resources and the Fiscal Division.
  • Partners collaboratively with the CMO and Director of Nursing to ensure that patient care needs are delivered in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Oversees medical, therapeutic, and rehab engineering education activities in collaboration with the Director of Staff Development.
  • Leads and ensures compliance staff licensure is timely and incorporates requisite reviews of professional practice and staff participation in quality and performance improvement processes.
  • Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the Joint Commission, CMS, and DPH Health Care Quality standards.
  • Ensures risk management reviews related to therapeutic services and programs are undertaken on a timely basis in response to adverse events, occurrence screens and in coordination with the Director of Risk, Compliance and Utilization Review and the Director of Health Information Service Department staff.
  • Liaises with other DPH Hospitals, Department of Children and Families (DCF), Department of Mental Health (DMH), Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), MassHealth, and other patient referral sources.
  • Plans and monitors staffing activities--including hiring, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives; creates and fosters an environment encouraging professional growth.
  • Serves as therapeutic staff representative, when appropriate, with review and approval of hospital and non-medical services policies and procedures; participates in Administrative on-call schedule rotations. Required Qualifications:
    • Board certified Physician licensed to practice in Massachusetts by the Board of Registration in Medicine, preferably in Pediatrics and/or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
    • Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties in area of specialization. Preferred Qualifications:
      • Demonstrated leadership role in a healthcare delivery system with knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision at the senior level, including planning, budgeting, organizing, directing, motivating, controlling and decision making.
      • Experience working with chronic disease and disability, especially children with co-morbid conditions.
      • Visionary leader with the traits of an influencer which include being an educator, facilitator, collaborator, communicator, negotiator, mentor, and a philosophy of collaboration and teamwork.
      • Capacity to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing program requirements.
      • Familiarity and experience with process of TJC accreditation, CMS certification, HCQ review, and other hospital practice review processes (e.g. Mass PRO).
      • Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead licensed therapeutic staff, rehab engineering staff, and support staff; this--includes--performance appraisal, employee coaching/training/development, and performance management.--
      • An appreciation of the importance of a multidisciplinary team, and what patient care departments and operations brings to the patient care endeavor, and the strength of that partnership.
      • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Outlook and Word.
      • Demonstrated ability to lead complex departments of ancillary services staff including therapies and rehab engineering.
      • 3 to 5 years of management experience and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
      • Understanding of therapeutic programs, modalities, and delivery of services to patients with multiple disabilities.
      • Knowledge of hospital-based medicine, programs, and delivery of service models.
      • Knowledgeable about quality assurance/improvement and risk management.
